About us

Peaceful Passing for Pets at Home provides in home euthanasia to allow for a comfortable and peaceful end-of-life for your pet. In addition, we provide quality of life assessments/consultations, as well as palliative care, if required, to keep your pet as comfortable as possible before it is time to euthanize.

Karen Downey, DVM

Meet your Vet

Dr. Karen graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2009. Since graduating, she has worked at a small animal veterinary clinic which enabled her to be involved in every aspect of a pet’s life, from puppy to senior, and to experience, along with the owner, all the highs and lows that come with pet ownership. Through these experiences, Karen realized that saying goodbye to a cherished pet is also one of the most emotional and memorable moments in a person’s life.

After saying goodbye to her own dog in 2020 at home, Karen realized the benefits of in-home euthanasia rather than an in-clinic setting. She decided to leave general practice and start on her own to provide in-home euthanasia, where she could offer a more private, relaxed, and peaceful transition for pets with their loved ones by their side. It has become her passion to make the euthanasia process easier for families by providing this essential service in the comfort and familiarity of home.

Karen has called Fort Saskatchewan home since 2009. She lives with her husband and 2 boys, as well as her mixed-breed dog, Lennox. In her spare time, Karen enjoys gardening, baking, painting, and traveling, and has played on a recreational league women’s volleyball team for the past 20+ years.
